Flooring & Remodeling FAQ

From “do you handle more than flooring?” to “which brands do you carry?” - here are answers to the questions North Shore homeowners ask most.

Every Question, Answered

Do you offer free in-home estimates around Chicagoland’s North Shore, northwest, western & southwestern suburbs? +

Yes. 11 North Inc provides free in-home estimates throughout Park Ridge and the surrounding suburbs - Arlington Heights, Glenview, Northbrook, Evanston, Wilmette, Winnetka, Highland Park and beyond. We measure, talk through materials, and leave you with an itemized written quote.

Is your hardwood installation really expert? +

Yes. Our installers follow the wood-flooring industry guidelines for acclimation, subfloor moisture testing, fastening, and finishing. proven, to-spec methods protect your warranty and ensure your hardwood floor performs for decades.

Which flooring brands do you carry? +

We install premium, name-brand flooring including Mercier, Luzon, Mulligan, De Chateau, Proverico, and Coastal Surfaces - covering hardwood, engineered wood, luxury vinyl, laminate, and waterproof wood-look surfaces.

How do you protect my home during the installation? +

Protecting your home is part of every job. We lay down floor and surface protection, contain dust at the source, mask off adjacent rooms, and clean up thoroughly each day. We treat your home like our own from the first day to the final walkthrough.

Do you only do flooring, or full remodeling too? +

Both. Beyond flooring, 11 North Inc handles kitchen and bathroom remodeling, basement finishing, roofing, siding, windows and doors, and decks and outdoor living - so one trusted team can manage your whole project.

What payment options and financing do you offer? +

We accept cash, check, and all major credit cards, and we offer financing so you can move forward on your project now and pay over time. Ask about financing during your estimate.

How long does a typical flooring project take? +

Most single-room flooring installs are completed in 1-3 days. Whole-home hardwood, refinishing, or remodeling projects take longer depending on scope. We give you a clear timeline in writing before any work begins.

Can you install herringbone, chevron, and other specialty patterns? +

Absolutely. Our expert craftsmen specialize in herringbone, chevron, wide-plank, borders, and mixed-width layouts using premium hardwood brands - the kind of detail that turns a floor into a centerpiece.

Do you work with both homeowners and businesses? +

Yes. We serve residential homeowners across the North and Northwest suburbs as well as commercial and light-commercial spaces that need durable, attractive flooring and build-outs.

Hardwood Flooring: Should I choose engineered or solid hardwood in the Chicago area? +

For many Chicagoland homes - especially over concrete, radiant heat or below grade - engineered hardwood is the smarter choice because its stable core resists our seasonal humidity swings. Solid hardwood is excellent for above-grade rooms and can be refinished more times. We assess your subfloor and room during the free estimate and recommend the right one.

Tile Flooring: Is porcelain or ceramic tile better for floors? +

Porcelain is denser and absorbs less water, so it’s the better choice for floors, wet areas and high-traffic spaces. Ceramic is fine for walls and lighter-traffic rooms and is easier on the budget.

Vinyl Flooring: Is luxury vinyl really waterproof? +

Yes - rigid-core LVP and LVT are 100% waterproof, which is why they’re a top choice for kitchens, baths and basements.

Laminate Flooring: Is laminate flooring waterproof? +

Standard laminate is water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. For wet areas like bathrooms we usually recommend waterproof luxury vinyl or tile instead.

Carpet: What carpet is best for stairs and high traffic? +

For stairs and busy areas we recommend a denser, lower-pile carpet in a stain-resistant fiber, which wears better and cleans more easily than thick plush.

Floor Refinishing: Can my old hardwood floors be refinished? +

Most solid hardwood and many engineered floors with a thick enough wear layer can be refinished. We assess the wood during your free estimate and tell you honestly whether refinishing is the right call.

Kitchen Remodeling: Do you handle the whole kitchen remodel? +

Yes. We’re a full-service remodeler and coordinate cabinets, countertops, flooring, backsplash tile, lighting and fixtures so you have one accountable team for the entire project.

Bathroom Remodeling: How do you make sure my shower won’t leak? +

We build a fully waterproofed shower assembly using proper membranes, set tile in full-coverage thinset, and seal grout correctly. Done to standard, the shower stays watertight for the long term.

Basement Remodeling: What flooring is best for a finished basement? +

Waterproof luxury vinyl and porcelain tile are top choices for basements because they handle below-grade moisture well. We recommend the right option based on your basement’s conditions.

Roofing: What is Da Vinci composite roofing? +

Da Vinci is a premium synthetic roofing that replicates natural slate and shake with superior impact, fade and weather resistance - a durable, distinctive upgrade over traditional shingles.

Siding: Why choose James Hardie fiber cement siding? +

James Hardie is durable, fire-resistant and holds its baked-on color well in Chicago’s climate, making it a premium, low-maintenance choice that stands up to freeze-thaw weather.

Windows & Doors: Which replacement window material is best? +

Vinyl offers the best value and low maintenance, wood brings classic warmth for traditional homes, and fiberglass delivers strength and slim sightlines. The best choice depends on your home and budget - we’ll walk you through it.

Decks & Outdoor: Is composite decking worth it over wood? +

Composite costs more upfront but resists fading, rot and scratching and needs almost no maintenance - no sanding, staining or sealing. Over time many homeowners find it well worth the investment.

Cabinets: What’s the difference between custom and semi-custom cabinets? +

Semi-custom cabinets come in standard sizes with many style and finish options at a strong value; full custom cabinetry is built to your exact dimensions and specifications. We offer both.

Custom Closets: Can you design a closet for a small space? +

Yes. We design systems for every size, and a smart layout often makes a small reach-in dramatically more functional.

Countertops: Is quartz or granite better? +

Quartz is non-porous and low-maintenance with consistent patterns, while granite is a natural stone with one-of-a-kind character and great heat resistance. Both are excellent - the best choice depends on your style and how you use the space.

Home Additions: Do you handle design and permits for additions? +

Yes. We manage the full process - design, engineering, permitting, construction and finishes - so you have one accountable team from start to finish.

New Construction: Do you build custom homes from the ground up? +

Yes. We manage the full build - site work, design, permits, foundation, framing, systems and finishes - through to a move-in-ready home.

Commercial: Do you do commercial tenant build-outs? +

Yes. We take commercial spaces from shell to finished - framing, flooring, finishes, fixtures and the trades in between.
